Makes me wonder how far will the government go to control sex.
Wow, that's idiotic.

Because abortion is as harmless as vasectomy.

Did you read the whole article? They're not intending for it to pass. It's a tongue in cheek response by Democrats to the Republican's bill about abortion that is being considered right now. Personally, regardless of how you feel on the abortion issue, I think it's completely inappropriate to use legislative resources and draft a bill as a "parody." We don't pay congressmen to spend resources making fun of each other.
I did but the fact that something like this was even being considered even as a joke is a scary thought on just what the government (in this case state) even jokingly is considering doing on issues of sex and reproduction.

Not that I am defending them, because I think it's ridiculous, but the point that they're trying to make (poorly) is the point you're arguing. They're not jokingly considering this- they're showing this as an absurd example of something that will never happen, and trying to relate it to the abortion issue.
EDIT: And, as a side issue, I imagine that there will be people who have no concept of the sarcasm involved in this, and who will wave it around as the serious stance of the Democrats. And maybe even a few who will jump on board and try to promote this because it limits birth control. So many levels of fail involved in this stunt.

Iran
sentences
Christan pastor to death for converting from Islam. I'd like those who want to defend Iran as on equal moral ground to the US to take note, and those who also defend Islamic fundamentalism as well as Islamic governments. By the way, I don't know why this is news. It isn't anything new.

I don't have a problem with Islamic governments. Or Christian ones for that matter.
But when they are fundamentalistic? Sh*t just goes crazy.

Hang on, didn't you argue in one of the many debate threads that "fundamentalist" =/= "extremist"?
I see this hasn't been mentioned yet:
the death of two foreign journalists in Syria as a result of the ongoing violence in the city of Homs
. I'm sickened by the apathy of certain major global powers regarding the situation in Syria, which certainly seems much more bloody than the Libyan rebellion.

No win situation. Those who usually intervenes cannot (no resources USA and Europe), those who can (China and Russia) won't for diplomatic and internal reasons. Just pull out and let it burn, at one point someone will win and deal with them then.
I was throwing stones particularly at China and Russia, yes. The point is that why should diplomacy and sitting comfortably in power take precedence over the lives of well over 7,000 people, and counting?

George Bush mentioned Syria as a repressive dictatorship in a speech made in 2006, Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the other hand...
I don't think anyone has claimed equivalence between the US and Iran (the Iranian government is much more repressive to its own citizens), just that Iran's fear of US invasion is probably well founded. Well, that and Egyptian people tend to see the US as a bigger threat than Iran.

All this makes Australia's big drama of Gillard Vs Rudd seem like we are having a pretty slow news week...or month.
Month, it's taken this long. If you check out SMH, they actually use a Green MP's tweet about the Syria situation to show how meaningless our news stories are.

The fundamentals of Christianity are not violent, nor are they extreme. The fundamentals of Islam are also not extreme, considering the numerous adherents. However, fundamental Islam often leads to violence. Fundamental Christianity never does. People must leave the fundamentals in order to be violent "Christians", if you want to call them that.
Regardless, neither fundamental Christianity, nor fundamental Islam is extreme. Extremism is a choice negative word used by people to paint religions in a negative light. Often, paint isn't needed.

Really? Cause I have seen a lot of headlines about hate crimes against gays by people who said it was an abomination according to the bible. And then there were the Crusades, and the Inquisition, so...maybe ANY religion when taken to an extreme is dangerous?

^ Thank you, Elhonna.
Extremist, violent "fundamentalism" is nigh universal among religions.

I'd say the most extreme views espoused by Jesus (if taken literally) would be self-mutilation, complete pacifism (informing others if they've sinned) and choosing one's religion over one's family. Taking the New Testament as a whole the concept least in line with Western culture is probably Paul saying women shall have no authority over men, nor permission to speak in Church nor to wear expensive clothes. Judging by canon, Jesus never killed nor slept with anyone.
The Quran dictates rules of engagement for battle, allowing the killing of transgressors. It offers instructions on divorce for when a girl hasn't started menstruating yet (as far as I'm aware). There is a Surah where that which is forbidden to others is permitted of Muhammad. Various hadith indicate that Muhammad married a girl (Aisha) when she was six and consummated the marriage at either nine or sixteen.
The Quran may not instruct its followers to be violent, but Muhammad, unlike Christ, makes no effort towards practising or preaching pacifism as far as I'm aware.

You misunderstand me, Elhonna. There are those that profess to be Christian that do terrible things, and say they are motivated by Christ's teachings. No doubt about that. But again, that's not what I was talking about. Try to back off form the overused talking points for just a second (seriously, the Crusades? How many times do you think I've heard that in a religion debate? Christ will be paying for the actions of the Catholic Church for centuries), and look again at what I was saying.
