Dear Goddess this makes my head hurt
. /shake head
Oh well, I guess people who have too much time on their hands needs to complain about something, no matter how stupid it is.

I approve of this commercial. I already drink a fair amount of coke (10 hour school days do that), but I might have another today...
Also, reminds me of the Cheerio ad. Apparently people were freaking out about that. God, I hate other Americans sometimes. Stupid intolerant %^&*s.

Aye I drink a lot of Coke, and I'm not gonna hold it against the company cause of that commercial =P. Heck, there is a Coke factory just down the street from me lol.

Nice!
I cheat, working at a theater (hey, flexible hours and pays tuition). Free drinks and lots of caffeine means that I drink more than I should :P

Lol, yeah I drink more then I should, but only at home. At work(call center) I mainly drink water(about 2 liters in a 8 and a half hour shift) with a 710 bottle of Coke that I mainly take a few sips of over the course of the day, and on breaks.
I almost miss MyTie cause I'm sure he'd have something....I guess interesting can work here, that he would say about that article. Maybe I should try to find FoxNews take on that commercial.

The commercial is cheesy and stupid, people being offended by it are acting stupid, the fact that it was turned into a news story is stupid, and people who post self-righteous comments on the internet about the incident aren't being much better (yes I include myself in this).
I don't think wanting people to assimilate (to a degree) to a country in which they choose to live is being stupid or intolerant btw. And this is coming from somebody who is engaged to a first generation immigrant. People need to stop assuming that everybody who has a different ideology than their own is inherently wrong, or has some horrendous personality default.
I don't know why people even bother watching the televised "news" anymore. None of it is actual news, it's just stupid stuff like this, which is designed to keep you interested long enough to get to a commercial, and sell you a Chrysler.

I consider myself quite conservative politically, but those who have problems with commercials like the Coke ad disgust me. As I look at my families ethnicity and most of those around me I find none that truly are not of immigrant stock (I have no Native Americans that I know of if my circle of acquaintances.) Most of what has made America the country that it is, is the influx of people from all over the world and thier desire to be productive members of society.
As far as the bruhaha around the Cheerios commercial, I had seen the ad and until the flap started about it being an interracial couple and mixed race child, I did not even notice that about it. I simply saw it as a family.
This type of thing SHOULD NOT, in my opinion, be any topic of dissent due to the reality of the situation being all around us, especially when there are other major issues that should be major discussion among thinking people.

Since you know, we're all immigrants? Okay, joke aside, assimilation is nice and all, but you don't have to give up your roots; considering that the other 7 languages were all still singing America the Beautiful, showing that they love their new county.
If you want to see true idiocy, look at the French Canadians up here; now that is stupid.

I agree with you to an extent, I just don't think that people who disagree with us are intolerant or stupid, just that they have a different view.

There's disagreeing...and then there's comments such as 'This is America, speak English' or 'I couldn't understand the commercial'; there are a loooooooot of stupid people out there.

Ryja, assimilation doesn't have to include complete abandonment of your previous culture. What's wrong with the commercial showing different languages of the many ethnicities that live in the US?
Here in venezuela, the official language is spanish, and everyone "should" speak it, much the same way as English is the official language of the US and anyone wanting to live there should make the effort to learn it, but that doesn't mean they should also abandon their roots. Here in venezuela apart from spanish, we also speak over 15 different dialects of the many many MANY aboriginal tribes that still live here, specially Wayuunaiki, who are we to ban them from speaking their language? or to have some commercials in both spanish and Wayuunaiki? (for that matter a large segment of the population in the borders with Guyana and Brazil speak both spanish and English and portuguese)
Being multi-cultural is a wonderful thing, and people whining because a soda company aired a single commercial in multi-language form, praising the multi-cultural nature of one's own country, are being (IMO) really REALLY thickheaded.

Technically, America has no official language.

Technically, America has no official language.
Sure they do...at least, according to the Republicans, some Southerners and a few other locations around the globe: They speak American. Considering some of the 'Engrish' I hear on the phone at work, I wholeheartedly agree with that lol.

I never said there was anything wrong with it, other than the fact that it has nothing to do with coke.

Actually the south is a lot more bilingual than most other parts of the country due to so many Hispanic speaking immigrants. You're propagating stereotypes with comments like this.

^ Bingo; I can understand the Spanish, Asian, Russian and other accents without much problem...but those Southern accents? Dear goddess, need to ask them to repeat what they mean several times.

OHHHHH, okay my bad. As long as he was enforcing a stereotype about the right kind of people, then I guess it's alright.
Tbh, the more I think about it the more I think that the commercial accomplished exactly what it was meant to, that is to say, start a controversy that gets everybody talking. The whole point of advertising is to come up with something catchy that sticks in your head, and makes you remember the product when you're doing your shopping later. They aired this thing during the Superbowl, when every other company had monster trucks and girls in bikinis pimping out their product. I think the folks at Coke knew exactly what they were doing. All the better for them that their media lapdogs picked up the story.

It's funny, 'cause it was people complaining about them that initially drew the media's attention. Blame the intolerant bigots who threw the fit, not the media reporting on it.

Hey now Funden, you know we aren't suppose to blame the people; it's always the fault of media.
