I've had that a few times; Americans on holiday have come up to my town(apparently my crappy town is a tourist spot, go figure), and I've had a few ask me why we don't have American flags up for the Fourth. I looked at them, looked at the Canadian flag hanging in the store window and said simply 'We don't celebrate that up here'. You'd be surprised how many Americans that #$%^es off, of course, these were probably the same American tourists who were backpacking through Europe and wore our flags and pins so as not to be focused on during the War on Afghan and Iraq.

THAT ISN'T WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT! IT'S ABOUT FRIGGIN PEOPLE NOT ALLOWED TO DISPLAY THE AMERICAN FLAG
IN AMERICA
!
Read caps as yelling, because that's what it is. Kids at an american school being intimidating to other students for displaying the American friggin flag.
Don't paint it as our idiocy... you jerk.

Did you even READ the article, or jump on the America bashing bandwagon the first chance you got? I'm swimming in imbeciles.

No, cheesy. It wouldn't offend me if I were in Mexico and people wore the Mexican flag on their shirt on July 4th.Obviously not if their intentions are okay. But what if they are blatantly trying to offend you and pick a fight?
If the student had no intention of picking a fight, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the shirt he was wearing and the school acted stupidly, though. But under the circumstances, it looked as if he were picking a fight.
And seeing your comparison between my posts, I withdraw it. We live in America, where should
always
be allowed the freedom to display our patriotism. I guess what I was trying to say, is that we shouldn't abuse that privilege and wear it for the sole purpose of upsetting someone (Again, assuming the child did it to invoke negative attention). Which, in itself sounds like disrespecting your own country by doing so, to me.
Edit: Also, I would like to quote this again: (Which sounds completely ridiculous in the first place. Dressing up and celebrating a country that you have decided not to live in begs for a "wtf?'') I think the children celebrating Mexico in
America
is just nonsense.

Hey, the article was about PC going too far; that the white Americans were afraid that the Mexican Americans would start a fight because we all know Cinco De Mayo is about a win against the America. I merely added in that I've seen it in other places; that the American people are so convinced that everything they do is right and fair, and they shouldn't trod on the 'lesser' people's holidays by flaunting their superior flag and beliefs. Also, thank you for pretty much proving my point there MyTie /bow.

What does it say, when people find the American flag offensive? The people attending American schools, paid for by American taxes, on American soil? It shows that there is a genuine problem with the population that would take offense to it. If anyone is offended by the American flag, they should not be on American soil, soaking up the public benefits of living in America.

It's a victory over the French, not the Americans. You need to do a little research before you act like you know what you are talking about. I don't think America is always right, and fair. However, when the American flag is against the rules in America... something IS WRONG.

Besides, Cinco De Mayo is not a national holiday in Mexico. It is observed primarily by Americans, in the United States. In the United States Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. The date is perhaps best recognized in the United States as a date to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry, much as St. Patrick's Day, Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year are used to celebrate those of Irish, German, and Chinese ancestry respectively. Similar to those holidays, Cinco de Mayo is observed by many Americans regardless of ethnic origin.

Sarcasm doesn't translate well; I know it was a victory over the French, which is why it's amusing that the teachers would think that the Mexican students would fight against the American ones. And yes, it is wrong that PC has gone to such a point that at a public school, where you are allowed to wear whatever you want(as long as it's not showing certain things) that they do respond like that.

...
I agree. The American flag should never be deemed offensive in the U.S..
Your posts gave me some perspective, thank you.

Christmas holidays are now 'winter holidays', St. George's day isn't allowed to be celebrated openly where I live, for fear of offending the poles or porteguese (which funnily enough also celebrate St. George's day). P.C isn't just a problem in America, teachers have been taken to court for wearing a crucifix in classes in the UK. Whilst I am atheist, I believe that people should be able to express their beliefs openly.

Haven't read all of the articles on the studies mentioned, but I found a few of them to be rather interesting, so I figured I'd share it.

I'd just like to point out that "America" encompasses both North and South America, not exclusively the United States.
However, "America" is an acceptable term to use in place of "The United States of America".

Only in the United States, if you travel to a foreign country and tell them you're from America, they would ask something like north or south, or from where in the Americas you're from. However, I realize that we are not in a foreign country, or at least, most of us.
... not really. I've been outside the US, said I was from America, and everybody I said that to knew it meant the US. Like I said, it is a commonly accepted term.
