20-30 people shot at a temple in Wisconsin
I think before people start calling for more gun control, we should start calling for more criminal control. Jared Loughner, the Arizona mass murderer has, according to sources, been offered a plea agreement to avoid the Death Penalty. Just maybe, if we would start actually bringing these killers to justice, it would stop even one of them.

Just not sure how slippery, though.
A couple things that stand out to me in that article are:
(a) He violated his probation? Now, I know it says he is a former gang member, so he could still be on probation from that. But, I would be interested in knowing if that is the case.
(b) His "gameroom". The one with the pulpit and pews. Regardless of if he should have the right to build a church on his property or not, lets not try and pretend that people are ignorant. Its a building, built for worship. Its not, and likely never was, a "gameroom". (IMHO, you should have the right to build a building for worship on your property, just don't insult my intelligence and call it a "gameroom")
(c)
And this is the biggie
. He filed his property for tax exempt status as a church.
"For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them".
Anyone should have, and, does have the right in this country, and the promise of the Lord, to gather and worship. But, if you choose to start taking advantage of the perks given to a church by the government, then you also have to be willing and able to abide by the same rules as all other churches.
I don't think the man deserves a 60 day sentence for a zoning violation....and I think there is more to the story why he got that.
One last thing that stood out to me is his prayer group in the jail. There is the saying "The Lord works in mysterious ways". Maybe his time in there could change a life?

Murder rates are lowest in states and countries without the death penalty. Norway has among the lowest recidivism rates in the world.

I think this would make a very good debate of the day.

And there goes another one
T_T You know, that SOPA law BS may have been rejected but for all intents and purposes, it may as well not be.
Ever since that day just about every site where I got everything on the internet has gone down. First it was Megaupload/Megavideo, now its Surfthechannel (my main source to see any TVshow for the past 4 years) and now Demonoid.
Its like its personal, one by one, every single site I use to get anything is being systematically being brought down.
What's next? mediafire? Fileshare?
damn those rotten bastards.

American black gymnast winning Gold medal is great
inspirational victory
for black people. Is it ok to say that Phelps winning is great for everyone, but especially white people?

I think you know why the article you linked to mentions her accomplishments being a message to young women of African American descent and also why saying the same about Phelps and whites is completely out of context.

I dont.
Why are her accomplishments not an inspiration to all young women, regardless of race? And why could Phelps not be an inspiration to all young white boys?

The article actually does say young girls and women (inferring all of them) then says especially those who are African-American. Now the way I am reading that is we are looking at a demographic that has been historically at a disadvantage African-American and female.
Now here is where the context part comes into play, young white males (such as Micheal Phelps) are not now as a group nor have ever been at a disadvantage in the USA.
That said I don't ever see anything wrong with encouraging anyone to reach for their goals. My original reply to Mytie was basically pointing out the difference in context and also subtextually that I thought he was reaching extremely far to stir the pot.

Further to what yukonjack said, the 'inspiration' aspect is not to reach your goals (for which there are numerous examples across many trades, industries and sports), but to overcome adversity.

Ok, let's put it squarely "in context" and see if it stirs the pot less. Tell me which of these quote is acceptable, if any:More important is the powerful message Gabby is sending to young girls and women, especially those who are African-American, about doing what it takes to make your dreams happen.More important is the powerful message Phelps is sending to young men and women, especially those who are white, about doing what it takes to make your dreams happen.I didn't put it all the way "in context" in order to stir the pot, but because context doesn't make this any less of a racist double standard.

Like it or not, blacks were discriminated badly for a very long time. And in some aspects still are. Huge strides towards equality have been made for them. But you can't deny that Gabby's story IS an inspiration to all girls, especially African-Americans. Michael Phelps is an amazing swimmer and he inspires all swimmers, including (but I wouldn't say
especially
) whites.
Let me put this in the best context I can:
US All-Around Medalists in Gymnastics:
Mary Lou Retton
Shannon Miller
Carly Patterson
Nastia Liukin
Shaun Johnson
Gabby Douglas
Gabby is the only African- American. Therefor being the only African-American makes her an inspiration to African-Americans
especially
.
US Mens Medalists in Swimming:
Too many to list but the list can be found
here
.
Basically because there is such a multitude of white swimmers on the teams throughout history, Michael Phelps isn't an inspiration especially to whites because whites winning is the normal. Please no one take that for racist, I'm going by facts.
Cullen Jones, only the second African-American to make the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, is the first African American to win an Olympic Gold Medal for his performance in the team’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay in 2008. By the same aspect Mr. Jones is an inspiration to African-Americans as well.

I was searching for a way to express how I personally would feel absolutely ridiculous saying...
More important is the powerful message Phelps is sending to young men and women, especially those who are white, about doing what it takes to make your dreams happen.
...and when I returned to this thread I see that Fatalheaven has illustrated perfectly how I feel.

and the previous record holder for most medals was also white.
