I would argue that our normal pets are just as much sentient. They are aware and perceptive. They can perform actions by themselves without direction from us but in our best interest. They stop attacking CC'd mobs, which indicates awareness. The skill
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=19574 says the pet feels no remorse or pity, both emotions that indicate sentience. They can feel fear too, meaning that while we're all gung ho to fight that dragon, maybe he's not so hot on the idea... If he knows what's good for him he'll go bite that dragon's ass.
My point is this, if it is alright to "enslave" our friendly companion, why can't we befriend a mob that is already part beast, is identified as a beast in game and out? Maybe after we tamed the angry beast within Garwal he wanted to help us to make up for past evils...
We even removed our pet's ability to run away. We can never feed them, have their happiness turn red, and they can't do anything about it, cause we own them and they'll eat when we say they can. Now go sit in the corner!
A dog can be trained, and having your pet not attack cc-d targets is just a form of training. They can also feel fear, and remorse (ever see a dog with his tail between his legs as u come home from work--knowing that he is going to be yelled at for getting into the trash?)
This doesnt make regular wolves (or dogs) sentient.
Look I am not nessesarily saying I agree with what blizz did--I am just saying I understand where they are coming from!

yeah since catlady doesn't seem to know
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=24261#comments gives the quest. A "thinking, sentient, plotting creature" that is the same as the pet I had before this whole worgen thing occured.
So that pretty much blows that entire issue out of the water leaving as I stated before
This is a "because we said so" issue. You didn't like it when you were a kid and probably don't like hearing it now, but what are you going to do?
Throw a fit?... could possibly help, but I am just going to get over it and summon and starve my worgen while in the cities.
Actually, I do know who gives me the quest. Please forgive me for not answering RIGHT away, since I dont spend EVERY second of my life on the wow forumns.
This is, however, perhaps the best example argument I have heard yet.
That said, the wolf who gives you the quest is NOT a thinking plotting creature, in the same way as the worgen. In my opinion, anyway.
Why? the dialog of the wolf that gives you the quest is very straightforward. I was alpha worg, I am not anymore, kill my enimies, so I can be again.
I dont see this as being so very different from the "thoughts" of a wolf in a normal wolf pack--they all wanna be the alpha
