If a society of people does things that are considered 'evil' by our society, is it acceptible for us to stop them?
Example:
If a society of people does things that are considered 'evil' by our society, is it acceptable for us to stop them?
Example:
If a small country in Asia promotes domestic violence, rape, oppression of minorities, forced suicides for population control, and sacrificing babies to their 'god', do we have a right to stop them? In this country, people are dieing of starvation, and random people are beaten mercilessly until they die, on a daily basis. I know this is an extreme example, but let's say it exists. Let's say that it is in their culture and religious beliefs to have this form of society. They have a democratically elected government, and keep electing officials that perpetuate the violence.
If we have the technology to scatter their people, and destroy their culture, giving them a chance to start over, or even, follow our example, should we?
IF NOT, THEN WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Do not limit your answers to: 'zomg, bad idea'... or 'yea, you shouldn't kill babies'... but actually think about the implications of destroying a culture. Think about what makes us right and them wrong. Think about what defines right and wrong. If you intend on dropping a one line 'yes' or 'no' type response without putting any more thought into it, then don't bother. Go back to recycle bin. Also, try reading all of the replies. The conversation may develop into something very interesting if we allow it to.

The responses in this forum were pretty predictible. I think what we lost in the Vietnam War, and what we will probably never get back is the feeling that we are right. Now that the concept of 'right' has been crushed, we will be easily defeated.
On a different note: What if an alien nation came in and tried to impose thier completely upside down society on us. They told us that it would take 'a long occupation and modernization' to get us to the point of 'self sufficiency'. Thier culture did crazy things like only taking a certain number of steps in a day, and never eating chickens. Apparantly chickens are really respected animals. The point is, their culture is vastly different and self deemed 'better'. Should we view ourselves as if we were a 3rd world nation, and accept thier rule and direction? Maybe we should, but we would never see it that way. Like Afghanistan could have it so much better if they would just calm down, put down the guns, put on a pair of jeans and a t shirt, and take up farming. They would have food. But they won't. Are we in the same shoes, but of different sorts? Are we upside down?
Edit: Zaputo... Hitler was elected legally.

No, it's completely different. Although the country I live in, usa, has problems, we have laws for the equal treatment of people, we protect individual rights, we don't kill people without cause, we punish offenders, etc. It wouldn't make any sense for another culture to try to tell us to respect chickens because that doesn't effect human life. Just like if we were to invade rawanda or something we wouldn't suddenly force them all to eat mcdonalds or listen to britanny spears (although they might want to anyway, and certainly we'd bring those things over, just like the respect for chickens, but we wouldn't kill people or occupy countries for not accepting mickyds). Long occupation and modernization to self sufficency as I wrote it means only to let the country develop it's own laws/constitution according to other countries bill of rights/geneva whatever, a police force to keep the laws, let them develop some sort of economy, education and food source.
These are all things which you view as 'right'. People in Afghanistan view thier system as 'right'. The people in that country could be like... "No. Although the country I live in has problems, we have laws. We take care of our kids. We are good people." This wouldn't change the fact that their culture is really self destructive. Compare that mentality to your own mentality. We live in a fairly decent society, but couldn't it be better? What if an alien civilization posed a better way, and even went far as to force it on us. How is this different than what we are doing in Afghanistan? I believe your sense of ego and nationalism is hindering you from having empathy toward 3rd world nations.
