I've never seen a female playing a male character, and yet...

Sex is chosen partly depending on what the character is going to be and how i imagine that particular concept, and partly depending on the fugliness of other models/animations. For example, i'll never roll a female dwarf and deleted a lvl 7 female NE hunter because of the stupid 1H weapon animation (dagger probably at that level).
In the end, as a male player, i have 5 male toons (main druid and a few rerolls) and 5 female toons (a level 80 warlock alt, a few rerolls and the bank/AH character).
And lol at all the people looking at implications on the sexuality of people. If anything at all, it would be about a player's capacity to virtualise an imagined behavior.
On that note, i played a female character on another MMORPG on an RP server and a RP guild. I basically forced myself (not that hard actually but somewhat of a discipline) to use the appropriate gender forms/sentences, without trying to force a "typical feminine behaviour" (whatever that could be). And the end result was that my guildmates were unable to decide wether i as a player was a man or a woman. No consequence at all in terms of how they treated me but a certain sense of satisfaction nonetheless.
Then we organised something on Vent, i went there and just talked normally and the secret was out. I still continued to talk as a female in game and in the forum, and nothing really changed. That's what roleplay is about in the end (and not "i play a woman so i should simper at every occasion").
The avatar i choose in a game is the representation of a number of concepts/moods/ideas that sprung out when i created it, a virtual person that i've created and that i am acting as. That's all there is to it. Depending on the game i'll take it more seriously as in "making it realistic based on the chosen setup" or not at all, but it's basically the same as an actor playing opposite sex or characters that have different personality from his own.
No bearing on oneself.

One of my alts is a female Nelf rouge. I chose that mainly because, historically, many, many women have been assasins.

I've always rolled male avatars, except on the last game I played. My reason for playing a female then was that aside from not having that particular class available for males, I thought it was a good idea to name it after my non-gamer girlfriend. It usually bought me some game time when she'd try to pull me off the computer then I'd go, "Oh, hey, look... Check out
your
new weapon. A-yup, and that there's
your
pet. Isn't it cute?", and I just found it amazing how it reduced the girlfriend aggro.
Drawback, of course, was the tells I'd get from other players, which I found to be so creepy that I just decided it wasn't worth it. So here I am on WoW, and I made sure I rolled a male. I do have a female NE druid alt, because I just had to take a female name I really liked, and a female human banker, just cos she's nice on the eyes. :P

Im a female and i only play female toons but i have friends who do play or have tried male toons which they quickly delete, however as many have commented i have seen alot of males playing female toons for whatever reason but, in my mains guild we had a male who pretended to be female to get other guys to do things for him he even stripped his toon and would rp stuff which as a 35 year old male{which he stated he was when confronted} was totally inappropriate ...myself i dont care what you play but do not pretend to be female irl and use others!{he used a friend of mine badly}and i know alot of younger males tend to at least try a female toon once there is nothing wrong with it at all!

Female gamer from back in the days of Atari... yes, I just dated myself.
I'm on an RP server, and I choose my character's gender to suit a certain mood when creating that character. Same as choosing class.
My characters are pretty much split down the middle, gender-wise. Though I do have some preferences based on race.
I like the looks of both male and female belfs. I'm female, and I have zero problems with the pretty male belfs. /shrug.
I rolled female human because the faces for the males are horrid. They are halfway okay if you cover them with facial hair, which I hate, so I have only one male human.
I prefer male -simply looks wise- for the rest of the Horde. Trolls simply because I like the way male trolls look (and they're fun) and the females are just kinda blah. Orcs... ugh, the females are just MANLY. (or would that be orcly?) And Tauren... yeah.
I have nelfs of both genders.
I currently don't have any gnomes or dwarfs... though I've been toying with it. My dwarf on LotRO was... well they only have males and I gave mine a gender neutral Viking name and I put him in a dress occasionally... yes, it's an RP server. I like to keep my mates guessing. ;)
As for the other players. I've actually had to /ignore and also report a player for harrassing my female belf. I don't like reporting people, but even after I refused to give my IRL gender, he continued with the lewd comments. My male belf never has any problems. He's the one I RP the most... and I never let on I'm female unless it's with my guild mates or someone I consider friend in game.
Summary: I have 12 characters spread across 3 servers and I'm female, genders are mixed.

Most of my toons are female because the male avatars look clunky. Human male priest with muscles bigger than a gnome warrior, yeah really stupid.
The only male toon I've ever made was an orc warrior, can't beat orcs for a warrior avatar, plus I couldn't think of a name that would suit a female (peonyourleg isn't exactly feminine).

It's a funny one. I don't talk/act any differently between my toons, but I do being amused by my guild one day - "Arletta is a guy?"
I choose my characters' genders based on what I think is right for them, and the archetype that I have in my mind for what I want to create. That means male Paladins, Warriors and Hunters, female Rogues, Warlocks and Priests. No particular reason, just is. My girlfriend rolled a female NE druid, because it fits the archetype she had in mind. (She almost went for a male Blood Elf, if that says anything.)
My older bro had a funny story once though. He rolled a female night elf Druid, and was getting hit on in SW one day.
Male Gnome: "Hey, wanna strip down and dance?"
Female NE: <no response>
Gnome: "what, b17c#, you got something against short people, huh?"
NE: "I'm a 30 yr old guy weighing over 100kgs in real life, you still wanna dance?"
Gnome: <no response>
NE: "What, you got something against fat people, huh?"

The males I know play females because of one thing: they roll hot ones. They would rather spend their time looking at a hot girl than a male. In my opinion the only hot male in the game are the belfs. The rest are just plain ugly, there is no getting around it.
I play both and I'm female. When I'm on a male, I get treated like one. Often it's assumed that I'm male while on females but my hottest females get a lot of attention from males. One has a dk who w/her every time I log her, saying 'I love you, do you love me?'. He also did it to my banker, which makes me think he is a weirdo. Perhaps dancing naked in Org when bored is not a good idea.
Some guys have a problem with females playing WoW and have refused to group with me or even talk to me after finding out I'm female. It sucks to have a really good tank tell you that you're a great healer and they want to pair up with you for runs, but then they find out that you're female via an innocent remark and won't have anything to do with you. Others are...creepy. Being asked for sexy pics and my personal details isn't what I wanted when I logged on. Ugh.
I don't care what the sex is of the person behind the character, so unless it's someone I know, I'll treat the males as males and females as females, even though I know they are all played by males because there are no girls on the internet.

I play female and male toons, but I tend towards female because my personality leans more in that direction.
However, I've noticed that if I'm on a female toon I get a LOT more freebies and help than I do if I'm on a male toon. I've started rolling females just so I can type a pouty emote and get stuff for free. I love people who think with the wrong head.
