Move down deeper into the Holy tree. Do whatever you want in the spec. But you'll have to get deeper in that tree eventually.

I finally got around to using this spec on a level 20 priest. She's now level 47 and can easily kill mobs (and players) 5 levels higher, and can even take on a group of 6 mobs (being the same or a couple of levels higher) with little difficulty.
When I think about the agony I went through leveling as shadow on another priest, it makes me want to stick a rusty spork in my eyes. I hardly have to drink compared to the shadow spec, and it's awesome being able to gank someone who thinks I'm going to be an easy target.
This spec is Made Of Win!

I want to go use it now on my lvl 7 priest with full heirloom + enchants (100+ mana on armor and 29+ sp on staff). :)
I'll report later how it is going.

Thanks for the wonderful guide. With Searing Light, I effectively 3 shot mobs with Holy Fire + 2x Smite. Spirit Tap means I never oom and the 2x heirloom trinkets help with mana also. I'm having great fun on my priest. :)

Any tips on how to get to that L20 mark easily? Or is it just a matter of obtaining the heirloom staff and getting on with it?
Grinding in Westfall is life-sucking. I'm resorting to playing less often so that I can build up more rested time to get from L10 to L20, since quests aren't that productive, one mob slowly at a time.

Get level 15, use the Dungeon Finder, heal instances.
PROFIT.

True that. I've been DPS'ing for so long, I've forgotten what an instant-queue dungeon is like.
Of course, that only cuts out half the grind ;p But good advice, nonetheless. Thanks.

For the other half, consider doing green quests in other newbish zones.
Battlegrounds as healer are also an option. You don't have to be level x6-x9 in order for your heals not to miss their targets. And as for the squishiness... well... l2ninjaheal. :) I had so much fun healing out of the bush in front of the WSG tunnel or from underwater hiding in the pool near Stables in AB.

Use the Dungeon Finder, or as an option go do Bloodmyst Isle. The end quests are Draenei only, but I've found that the Draenei/Blood Elf starting zones are so much easier than the other starting areas, and you get better quality gear.

You get full value out of Meditation when Spirit Tap is (already) off and the mob is not dead (yet). If you're "unbelievably slow" for some reason, as you mentioned, then you waste a decent amount of mana while working on the first mob kill.
As to the reasons of your being "unbelievably slow", my only guess is you forgot Glyph of Smite. Then again, I don't like having to guess. An armory link would allow for more specific advice.

If you're healing instances 99% of the time, feel free to respec full healing.
The spec was designed for soloing mobs first and foremost. The fact that its healing capabilities surpass the alternative, shadow, by a wide margin does not cancel that. It's still nowhere near a proper healing spec if you are doing challenging content.
Although in that situation, I would at least wait until 60 questing in Hellfire, then go full Disc.
Penance
yum.
(Edit: I assume dual spec is not an option, otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question.)

I think I'll probably switch to Shadow once I can grab VT and Twisted Faith, but I might (might) stick with Energizer to 80.
I leveled 2 priests already and I can tell that after hitting 70, Shadow is much better. The single burst damage from dot/mindflay crits rivals HF/Smite. However, with Smiter you are forced to kill one mob per 10 seconds (HF cd), while in Shadow you are able to dot one, then half dot and Mindflay second (killing both at same time), making overall leveling faster.
Burning Crusade is just painful, no matter what spec are you, at least until you upgrade everything with BC gear with maximum number of sockets with spell power.
If you are playing on pvp server, there is no choice. After 70 either go Shadow, or die from every class and spec possible.
Makes the whole process less boring as, at these low levels, there's not much I need to be doing after shielding the tank and it feels like I might as well go afk half the time.
Well, you are going into Deathtards turd. That means dps with Frost Presence using Death Grips on targets 5 yards from him (don't ask him to change it, he doesn't know english anyway). That means "tanks" that somehow evaded every tanking talent in their talent trees and are quequing as tank because it's faster than dps. Retardlings are also quite common.
That combined with higher damage from mobs, stuns, silences, patrols, fears, mind controls, mana burns, tanks leaving party after fail pull (lulz iz not gunna pai repair) and much, much more, will make sure you won't go asleep.
Then again, if you know some good tank at your server that you can level with together, you could probably still be able to heal/dps at same time with Smiter. Just don't try this with randoms.

But I am wondering ... what does it give you over just Spirit Tap? Talking about questing here, not instancing.
The first mob dies fast so the Spirit Tap regen is up most of the time. Which is 83%. All those many points in Disc give nothing but 17% in combat regen then ... it hardly seems worth it.
From my (limited) experience I'd say that even 100% in combat regen all the time isn't enough to keep spamming everything.
You're right in the sense that no spec can ever make mana irrelevant. It still is a resource. Even rogues don't have really unlimited resources, it's just that they regenerate them faster. Yes, my "no downtime at all" was a bit exaggerated, but frankly, I have never seen a caster class being so mana efficient.
As for me, the points in Disc are worth it. Having 100% in combat regen is fantastic. You could argue that 1 point in Meditation would be enough for questing, but I do instances often, so an extra 33% in-combat regen looks a worthy investment in my eyes. :)
Edit for numbers.
Bear tank never needs rage when he is doing his job properly (besides after a wipe). That is the closest to 'needs no resources'
